Following on from our fantastic Shonen interview, we thought we’d stick with the 8-bit theme and talk to Expect Delays, a new electronic act from British Columbia…
Cat On The Wall: How did Expect Delays come about? Tell us about yourself!
Expect Delays: Expect Delays has been a bit of a process. I started playing around with a few different music programs about 10 years ago. I was really into going to raves around that time so I was making a lot of Acid Techno, I was only 18 so I was still living at home. I then moved to Vancouver and stopped writing music all together, but about 3 years ago, out of nowhere, I sat down and started writing again. Just recently I started playing around with 8-bit sounds and synths and am really enjoying the music I have been producing lately.
COTW:Where do you draw your inspiration from when creating your music?
ED: I find I need to be in a certain state of mind to write anything, rainy days are the best days to sit in my room and work on music. I guess that’s why a lot of my songs are so sombre. I guess also a lot of it comes from being a child in the 80’s. The early video game consoles Atari and Cleco Vision as well as games like “Maniac Mansion” and “Fester’s Quest” for Nintendo. Horror and Sci-Fi movie scores like “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Liquid Sky” also helped shape what I like, listen to and produce.
COTW: You mention that you would like to work on remixes and collaborations on your myspace page. Is there anyone that you would like to work with or remix and if so, who?
ED: There’s so many artists I would love to work with. Martin L. Gore of Depeche Mode would be at the top of the list, as well as cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy. I find remixing and collaborating helps me grow as an artist, I learn so much when I de-construct other people’s music and try to put it back together.
COTW: Have you performed live yet? Is this something you’d like to do?
ED: I am yet to perform a live set but would love the chance to share my music with people. When ever I finish a song I upload it to myspace right away just so people can here it and comment on it. I love sharing my music with anyone willing to listen. The thing is I don’t have enough equipment yet. I have to use a rockband mic for vocals, a cheap casio keyboard, and a computer with a few programs and editing software. I figure I’ll give myself 6 months to year till I have a live show planned out. So keep a look out, expect delays.
COTW: What are you listening to at the moment?
ED: Well I’m listening to a few different things at the moment. I really like Fever Ray’s debut album, it’s such a beautiful record. I’m also listening to a lot of The Smiths and The Misfits lately, not to mention the new Depeche Mode album. I’m really digging the direction electronic music is going, so many good bands to chose from.
COTW: Finally, what’s next for Expect Delays?
ED: I’m working on starting a band with my good friend Michael at the moment, him singing and me doing the rest. I’m not really sure what what we’re gonna call ourselves, or what we’re going to sound like but am really excited to get it going. I’m still growing as an artist so I can’t really say where I’ll be in a year, I do know that I won’t ever stop experimenting with music. Brap on…….
